How we work

Our Impact Vision

ASD’s vision is to achieve and promote palm derivatives sourcing that is free from deforestation, respects human rights, and supports local livelihoods.

Our Framework for Action

ASD pursues this vision through four workstreams:

  • ASD recognizes that achieving transparency is a necessary input in addressing deforestation and human rights pressures in supply chains, especially as regulations require companies to achieve visibility upstream and confirm responsible supply.

ASD is increasing transparency and consolidating a common framework to focus efforts. ASD has continuously progressed on creating a global, transparent mapping of members’ palm derivatives supply chains.

    Key activities include:

    • Mapping our members’ supply chains to source, achieving transparency to refinery, mill and plantation level

    • Identifying environmental and social risk hotspots at the province level, mill level, and grievance level

    • Aligning our transparency approach with the broader sector

  • With a high number of environmental and human rights violations linked to palm production, accurate risk monitoring and operational grievance management are key to building a sustainable supply chain.

ASD leverages dynamic monitoring systems to identify grievances and support members to actively manage non-compliance.

    Key activities include:

    • Monitoring of human rights and environmental grievances in the palm oil sector

    • Proactive monitoring of deforestation grievances through use of satellite monitoring tool, Nusantara Atlas

    • Ongoing coordination with NGOs and civil society on priority grievances

    • Streamlining supplier engagement on priority grievances

  • ASD aims to create a unified voice of influence for derivatives users, and a platform for engaging with the full sector towards the common goal of securing NDPE-compliant (and regulatory-compliant) supplies in derivative supply chains.

ASD is engaging the sector and supply chain towards accessible NDPE solutions.

    Key activities include:

    • Supporting our members in understanding key regulation developments

    • Engaging RSPO to promote robustness of the mass balance certification model

    • Participating in RSPO Human Rights Working Group sub-groups

    • Engaging traders on possibilities for coordinated supply chain control mechanisms

    • Evaluating direct and indirect palm derivative suppliers using the Sustainable Palm Index scorecard

  • Positive change on the ground requires significant resourcing, and individual companies can only achieve limited impact. Through ASD, member companies can pool resources to collectively support impact projects in priority sourcing regions.

ASD scales up long term collective action in key production landscapes.
